Daikin Altherma fault L5-00
Outdoor unit: inverter instantaneous overcurrent
Heat pumpWhat it means
An output overcurrent is detected by checking the current that flows in the inverter DC section, causing the unit to stop operating.
Likely causes
- Closed stop valve in the refrigerant circuit
- Clogged refrigerant circuit
- Refrigerant overcharge or shortage
- Non-condensables and/or humidity in the refrigerant circuit
- Faulty inverter PCB
- Faulty compressor or miswiring of the compressor power supply cable
- Faulty or disturbance of the power supply (power supply MUST be within range of nominal operating voltage ±4%)
- Power drop
- Short circuit
- Thermal interface grease NOT applied properly on the heat sink
- Faulty refrigerant pressure sensor
- Poor water flow through high pressure side plate heat exchanger
- Incorrect refrigerant charge
- Bad contact between refrigerant loop and inverter heat sink
- Lack of refrigerant
- Faulty expansion valve
- Faulty suction thermistor
- Blockages in refrigerant circuit
- Faulty discharge pipe thermistor
- Worn or damaged compressor dampers causing vibration/noise
- Compressor guard timer active
- Normal inverter control behavior when target temperature achieved
- Water pump software control behaviour based on setting [F-0D]
- Special software control activated - water loop temperature is too low causing ONLY the backup heater to operate
- Faulty compressor winding
- High pressure switch confirmed faulty during checking procedure
- Flammable refrigerant remaining dissolved in compressor lubricant
- Wrong assembly during repair
- Excessive heat applied during brazing near compressor pipes
Where to start
- Check that all stop valves of the refrigerant circuit are open
- Check if the refrigerant circuit is clogged
- Check if the refrigerant circuit is correctly charged

Safety: Isolate the outdoor unit and any backup heater, and give the inverter capacitors time to discharge before you open the electrics. Anything on the refrigerant circuit needs F-gas certification.
From the Daikin manual for the Altherma. Check the model on the data plate before you order parts.
